Tutorial [TU/25/11]

During my tutorial I discussed further the materiality of the project and the idea of using brick within the construction of my building. Ronnie discussed how the brick can be used poetically within the building the idea being that because the brick derives from the earth through clay and clay was an important part of prestons ecological surroundings and history. Also that because it is from Clay it has matter and the 'dust of the earth' is where man comes from to where he will return. Aldo Rossi talks about this in his works.

We discussed how the architecture becomes less about the buildings form as in the past and even within my conceptual work within this project I tend to produce works that become very much about the buildings form even though I derive my designs from within the context and take into consideration the urban and historical aspects surrounding any site or project. All my designs in the past have then been informed by these factors and I haven't entirely immersed myself within the theoretical aspects of architecture by looking at theory and seeing where I can create a building thinking theoretically.

We discussed how light can used as a means of enhancing the architecture. Ronnie reminded me of a visit that we took to Liverpool where he showed us a project that he had done with Urban Splash of somem apartment blocks. The blocks were made of brick and were in essence a red box. The way in which the architects created the architectural aspects of this otherwise simple form was the orientation and dimension of windows with large floor to ceiling glass predominating the north facade and flooding north light into the living space and smaller windows puncturing the south facade where the kitchen was situated. On the South the way the light shines into the site reflects off the brick work creating orange hues within the courtyard found below which creates a feeling of warmth typical of an area closer to the Mediterranean than the Irish sea. Much more thought had gone into the Architecture than would meet the uneducated mind. The building also was an addition to the

We discussed the idea that Phenomenology and Ontology. Ontology being the way we experience the world and the idea of existence and knowing we exist. The definition on wikepedia was:

Ontology (from onto-, from the Greek ὤν, ὄντος « being; that which is », present participle of the verb εἰμί « be », and -λογία-logiascience,studytheory) is the philosophical study of the nature of beingexistence or reality as such, as well as the basic categories of being and their relations. Traditionally listed as a part of the major branch of philosophy known as metaphysics, ontology deals with questions concerning whatentities exist or can be said to exist, and how such entities can be grouped, related within a hierarchy, and subdivided according to similarities and differences.
