PRECEDENT STUDIES [S/22/11]

During my tutorial on Friday with my tutor i began to explain a few of my ideas with regards to starting to experiment with concepts for my design having taken the research and site analysis factors into consideration. I expressed how i felt the materiality was an important aspect of the sites history as it uses Lancashire brick which was an important part of the economy through the last century. 


I explained about the brick sculpture on site that declares "brick is beautiful" and the idea of utilising and reclaiming the brick of the buildings that would be removed to make way for the theatre helping make the building carbon neutral. I suggested that it would be interesting to explore how I could construct the building entirely of brick. He made me aware of a project by Caruso St John who did a similar approach of a home that they designed. I thought the building really celebrates the material, a material upon which we have relied for so many decades. The building utilises the material in a ways beyond the conventional and does it so well.
